RESORT SPOTLIGHT - SUN VALLEY

It happened in Idaho first.

Sun Valley introduced North America to alpine skiing with its creation in 1936 and to this day sets the standard for world-class mountain resorts. The legendary mountain where the chair lift was invented, the world’s first ski school started is right in your backyard. And to top it off, the world’s largest snow-making system lays down a perfect base.

Any Idaho passionate skier or boarder worth their salt should make a pilgrimage to Sun Valley this winter. You’ll find a mountain with 3,400 feet of sustained, impeccably maintained vertical. Jack Sibbach, Sun Valley’s Director of Sales, Marketing and P.R. says that with the abundance of high speed lifts, constant pitch and lack of lines, it’s not uncommon to rack up 50,000 feet of vertical in a day.

The huge vertical total you will rack up at here is bound to wear you out. Fortunately Sun Valley’s accommodations provide all the amenities a snow rider could imagine and more. From the historic elegance of Sun Valley Lodge to cozy condominiums throughout the mountain village, there’s something for everyone here.

There’s even more to Sun Valley that no other mountain in the country can offer. It’s innovative Lift Exchange Program lets destination skiers who buy a multi-day lift ticket exhange a day of skiing for another activity.

“If the weather’s not good or you overdo it on the first day, you can exchange skiing for another activity,” Sibbach said. “There are 10 or 11 different things you can do instead—massagae, dinner and a movie, sleigh ride—either way you’ll get your money’s worth.”

Last season hundreds of guests took advantage of the Lift Exhange. Sibbach said that some people came on five-day packages and did different things every day without skiing.

You can do a lot more at Sun Valley that just ski or board. But with such a great mountain, that should definitely come first—and soon. State of the art snowmaking virtually guarantees that Sun Valley begins its 56th season on Thanksgiving Day.
